“It was engineered to have increased shade tolerance, though it does best in full sun and thrives with five or more hours of direct sunlight each day,” Fong says. “It’s also more disease- and insect-resistant than other varieties, and because it’s salt- tolerant, it grows well near beaches.”
Lawns planted with Zeon Zoysia should be mown every one to two weeks with a reel mower set at three-quarters of an inch, he adds.
Zeon Zoysia needs little water and fer- tilizer. In 2007, researchers at North Caro- lina State University tested the turfgrass against several other common and popular Zoysia grass varieties, studying how well each variety did with minimal fertilization.
“As the amount of fertilizer was re- duced, almost every variety showed se- rious decline in quality — except Zeon Zoysia,” Fong recounts.
