says Homeworks president and chief administrative officer Marshall Hick- ox. “There are often varying opinions on fixtures and interior finishes so we work with the family to achieve a bal- ance between functionality, aesthetics, durability and cost. They can review photos and renderings of other similar Homeworks projects. Budgeting and scheduling will also need to be consid- ered. Because we are experienced in multigenerational homebuilding we can offer many options to choose from be- fore making final decisions.”
Homeworks Construction was named “Builder of the Year” by the Building Industry Association and one of Hawaii’s “Best Construction Com- panies” in Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s “Hawaii’s Best” awards program. The National Association of Home Builders designated the company a “Built Green Professional” and “Aging in Place Specialist.” To make an appointment for a no-fee consultation on site or at the Homeworks office at 2111 S. Multigenerational families choos- ing to rebuild on site to obtain more living space instead of moving to a larger home elsewhere is a growing trend in older Oahu neighbor- hoods. Often the motivation is attachment to the neighborhood due to its familiarity and convenience to schools, shopping and workplaces. In addition, building a new custom home provides the family with an opportunity to participate in the design process and select features that support their unique lifestyle.
Creating multigenerational homes for Hawaii families is a specialty of Home- works Construction, an award-winning design-build firm in business for three decades. Projects in progress in Manoa, Kapahulu and St. Louis Heights (see pho- tos) involved demolition of original fam- ily homes, which were 50- to 80-year-old
single-story structures, and replacement with two-story custom designed residenc- es with as much as double the amount of living area. Extra yard space was used to expand horizontally for the addition of covered decks and outdoor lanais as alternate locations for dining and enter- taining, laundry areas, garages and paved driveways to augment parking options in densely built neighborhoods. Accessory dwelling units were added to accommo- date extended family with private quarters offering independent living apart from the main house.
“In our meetings with the family at their home and our conference room, we discuss options for design and layout as well as the many details involved in cus- tomizing the new residence. We want to be sure it serves the needs of the several generations that will be living there,”
