BY CAROLINE WRIGHT
As any enthusiastic amateur chef can at- test, a well-designed
kitchen is a true joy. And even casual home cooks would love this kitchen.
Located on Kapahulu Av- enue in a home built by Ho- nolulu firm Rui Construction, it boasts plenty of snowy white granite counter space and an easily maintained floor of big ceramic tiles in a com- plementary shade. A stain- less exhaust hood over the
stove provides a retro vibe, and stainless appliances are placed in logical proximity. A trio of frosted glass fixtures hanging from the cathedral ceiling and a half-dozen re- cessed lights, provide ample overhead illumination.
Just above the toe kick at the bottom of each cabinet, a lighted strip that matches the lighting under the cupboards provides illumination for lower storage. The thought- ful addition makes this room even more functional. Be- hind a bank of drawers and
cupboards, a hidden walk-in storage pantry offers another delightful surprise.
“The hidden pantry was re- ally a unique addition to the house,” says Jon Xie, man- ager of Rui Building Supply, the construction company’s sister firm. “From outside it looks like cabinets, but when you open the door, it leads into a walk-in storage space behind the kitchen wall.”
The home on Kapahulu Avenue was built with im- pressive efficiency by a Rui Construction crew led by Ray Xie, who happens to be Jon’s father.
“They tore the old house down to the foundation, and built the new house from the ground up,” says Jon. “There were some delays with sup- ply chains, but they managed to get it done within six or seven months.”
ONE-STOP BUILDING SUPPLY
Thanks to Rui’s full-service approach, the construction company can manage all aspects of a new build or renovation, and the building supply company can provide many of the fittings that make a house feel like home.
Located on Sand Island Access Road in Honolulu, Rui Building Supply’s main showroom is packed with fixtures of every kind: cabi- nets and cupboards; show- ers and vanities; apothecary cabinets; chrome and bronze towel racks, bars and rings; sinks and basins in porcelain and glass; classic and con- temporary LED lights; and vinyl plank flooring in a dozen shades.
“In the Kapahulu Avenue kitchen, the tile flooring, gran- ite countertops, sink, custom
cabinets and lighting all came from our showroom,” says Jon.
Rui’s excellent selection of porcelain tile — ideal for high- traffic areas, bathrooms and kitchens — regularly attracts customers from all over the island. The showroom is also known for exceptional deals on cabinets, perfect for do- it-yourselfers.
FULL-SERVICE CONSTRUCTION
Homeowners who prefer to let professionals do the job can count on Rui Construc- tion to make their dreams real.
“We’re a one-stop shop, and we can do pretty much any- thing, from small renovations to huge projects,” says Jon. “We can help come up with the designs and ideas, and use materials from our sup-
ply company when we build.” The company also subcon- tracts the services of licensed plumbers and electricians, so clients don’t have to find their
own.
“If you’re doing a renova-
tion and need supplies, you’ll likely find them in our show- room,” Jon adds. “And if you shop for materials and find you need assistance with your project, our sister com- pany, Rui Construction, can help. It’s great to be able to offer the complete package!”
Contact Rui Construc- tion for new builds, rebuilds, renovations and everything in between. And when you’re ready to shop for materials, visit Rui Building Supply, Rui Construction’s sister compa- ny, at 155 Sand Island Access Road in Honolulu. The show- room is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
