On-site rebuilding, an area trend
Remodeling and re- building activity have remained brisk in
neighborhoods throughout Oahu despite the impact of the pandemic on the econo- my. Commenting on Kaimuki — a neighborhood that has continued to reinvent itself over the years — one resident observes that the pandemic may actually have served to focus attention on the ad- visability of expanding and upgrading an existing home to accommodate extended family in a multigenerational setting. Older homes in Kai- muki are typically small and single level, but often with lots large enough to expand horizontally or add a second floor.
The enduring popularity of the neighborhood is due primarily to its convenience
to many schools, churches, parks, and shopping options with Kahala Mall and Kapa- hulu at either end, and the Kaimuki Business District extending along the mauka border. The Kahala boundary of Kaimuki is defined by 22nd
Avenue, which extends from Harding Avenue to Diamond Head Road.

design-build firm has com- pleted numerous new custom homes and renovations in the Kaimuki neighborhood, most recently a rebuild on 22nd (pictured above) and anoth- er on the corner of 2nd and Harding avenues.
