A tough turfgrass

When it comes to turfgrass, Tahoma 31 is having a winning season.

This gorgeous bermudagrass variety, known for its hardiness, wear resistance and drought tolerance, has been planted on athletic fields all over the United States.

Tahoma 31 has been the playing surface for the MLB All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium. “Some experts call Tahoma 31 the most drought-tolerant variety they’ve seen,” Fong says. “It has an extensive and deep root system. It can withstand varied mowing heights, drought stress-es, salinity and shade — conditions that negatively affect other bermudagrasses — and it thrives in full sun.”

Bred for island climates
Since it was bred to offer low vertical growth, Tahoma 31 is a great choice not just for athletic fields, but also for Hawaii’s residential lawns. Developed by leading turf scientists at Oklahoma State University in 2007, the finely textured, dark green grass went through rigorous testing for more than 15 years through the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program before being released for commercial production.
