One hundred thirty-one years ago, zoysiagrass came to the United States and has since emerged as a superstar in the American turfgrass industry.
Brought to the U.S. by agronomists, diplomats and missionaries from different parts of East Asia and the Pacific Islands, zoysiagrass has been studied and bred for durability and hardiness for many years.
“The results speak for themselves: zoysia is known to be a durable, tolerant turfgrass that can stand up to heat and drought, which makes it great for Hawaii,” says Sean Fong, owner of Hawaiian Turfgrass. “Our zoysia varieties were bred for climates specifically like ours, and they are just perfect for Oahu’s residential lawns.”
AN OUTSTANDING TURFGRASS
Native to Asia, zoysiagrass has been cultivated since the first lawns appeared in America in about 1895. More than 50 zoysia varieties have now been bred, with about a dozen emerging as outstanding turfgrasses.
“Generally, zoysiagrass is resistant to disease, pests and weeds,” says Fong, adding that Hawaiian Turfgrass offers three varieties of zoysiagrass: El Toro Zoysia, Zeon Zoysia and brand-new Stadium Zoysia.
EL TORO ZOYSIA
Long the standard for Honolulu’s residential lawns, El Toro Zoysia is a medium-bladed grass that thrives in full sun and tolerates light shade. It is drought tolerant, highly durable and light green in color.
ZEON ZOYSIA
Developed in Texas by Bladerunner Farms, rich green Zeon Zoysia was used in the first Olympic golf course ever built, for the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro. Because it requires less water, fertilizer, nitrogen and pesticides compared to many other turfgrasses, Zeon Zoysia was a perfect choice for Rio, and remains an excellent option for Hawaii’s residential lawns.
STADIUM ZOYSIA
Earlier this year, Hawaiian Turfgrass began offering Stadium Zoysia, the newest release from Bladerunner Farms. Stadium Zoysia is becoming hugely popular all over the country, thanks to its extraordinary natural dark green color.
“Stadium Zoysia is a finely textured, incredibly barefoot-friendly grass that exhibits the darkest green color of any zoysiagrass on the market,” Fong says. “It’s just gorgeous without a lot of maintenance, which means it needs less fertilizer and watering, and creates less runoff.”
The new variety is extremely tolerant of heat and drought, and can handle heavy foot traffic, adds Fong.
“Stadium’s rapid rate of lateral spread, deep root system, and extensive rhizomes make for superior wear tolerance and fast recovery,” he says. “This turfgrass is causing tremendous buzz in the industry, with good reason.”
