Choosing the best turfgrass

Last month, McLemore, the legendary golf club located atop Lookout Mountain in Northwest Georgia, made an exciting announcement on social media.

The Keep is McLemore’s new 18-hole course, designed by famed golf architects Rees Jones and Bill Bergin, scheduled to open next summer. It will be the first golf course in the country planted entirely with Stadium Zoysia.

And Stadium Zoysia, of course, is the gorgeous turfgrass developed by Bladerunner Farms, the largest privately owned zoysiagrass research facility in the world.

SOFT RESIDENTIAL LAWNS

Available exclusively in Hawaii from Hawaiian Turfgrass, Stadium Zoysia is extremely heat and drought tolerant. Known for its deep root system and extensive rhizomes, which provide excellent wear tolerance and recovery, the finely textured grass has a rapid rate of lateral spread. Full sun is ideal, but it can tolerate temperatures in a variety of climates, from low desert to coastal regions.

“Stadium Zoysia is really durable, and can handle a lot of foot traffic,” Fong says. “And families love it because it’s so soft and carpet-like. This grass is ideal for Oahu’s residential lawns.”

Maintenance of a lawn planted with Stadium Zoysia is fairly easy. Fong recommends weekly mowing with a reel mower.

“This grass can be cut at different mower heights, from a quarter inch to 1 inch,” he says. “The longer the leaf blade, the darker it will appear.”
