If you’re a homeowner who enjoys golf — or one who loves soft, barefoot-friendly lawns — you might be very interested in a beautiful, lush turf-grass called Zeon Zoysia.

“It’s really different from other grasses, and especially from Emerald Zoysia and the other Zoysia grasses we’re used to,” says Sean Fong, owner of Hawaiian Turfgrass, the state’s exclusive licensed producer of Zeon Zoysia. “Nobody wanted to sit or walk on the old Zoysia. It was hard to mow and maintain.”

Zeon Zoysia, Fong explains, has completely different characteristics.

“A thick mat of Zeon Zoysia feels almost like a luxurious carpet under bare feet,” he says. “It’s incredibly soft, with a ‘wow factor’ look. Pets love it, too!”

HARDY, TOUGH AND RESISTANT

Robust and resilient, Zeon Zoysia may have been created with fairways in mind, but it’s perfect for Hawaii’s residential lawns. Developed by turfgrass expert David Doguet of Bladerunner Farms in Poteet, Texas, the variety was bred from Zoysia grass selections collected around the Pacific Rim by USDA breeder Jack Murray.

“It was engineered to have increased shade tolerance, though it does best in full sun and thrives with five or more hours of direct sunlight each day,” Fong says. “It’s also more diseaseand insect-resistant than other varieties, and because it’s salt-tolerant, it grows well near beaches.”

Lawns planted with Zeon Zoysia should be mown every one to two weeks with a reel mower set at three-quarters of an inch, he adds.

Zeon Zoysia needs little water and fertilizer. In 2007, researchers at North Carolina State University tested the turfgrass against several other common and popular Zoysia grass varieties, studying how well each variety did with minimal fertilization.

“As the amount of fertilizer was reduced, almost every variety showed serious decline in quality — except Zeon Zoysia,” Fong recounts.

Thanks to its density, Zeon Zoysia has been described as “the most playable fairway turf on the market.” This verdant, lovely grass was featured on the course designed for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. It’s used at the Tiger

Woods-designed Bluejack National, and it’s also featured at Grove XXIII, the Florida course fronted by basketball’s Michael Jordan and named for the “23” he wore on his uniform.

Golfers say Zeon Zoysia’s tightly packed blades hold a ball up almost like a tee, but homeowners love its density because it inhibits weed growth. Through the end of November, Hawaiian Turfgrass will offer a $500 discount on delivery and installation of a new lawn with Zeon Zoysia or any of their other varieties (minimum 400 square feet).

“Zeon Zoysia is one of the lushest, most barefoot-friendly turfgrass varieties on the market today,” Fong says.
