Safety matters on journey to a new roof

At a recent roofing estimate, a West Oahu Roofing Inc. estimator was asked, “What are the other costs included in the re-roofing estimate besides material and labor, and why are those costs necessary?”

This week, West Oahu Roofing Inc. will focus on three of those associated costs: roofing contractor licensing, insurance and safety.

In the state of Hawaii, it is a privilege to apply for and receive a roofing contractor license. All licensed contractors have to pay taxes, insurances and have overhead to run their business. Roofing contractors show to a contracting board that they have been in the industry for a minimum of five years and have recommendations from their peers in the industry ensuring ethical business practices. In addition, licensed contractors are able to provide legitimate workmanship warranties and material warranties to homeowners. Unlicensed contractors cannot provide warranties.

Licensed roofing contractors are obligated to obtain general liability insurance and workers’ compensation insurance. Being that our roofers are working at a height above 6 feet daily, the insurance for roofing companies is one of the highest in the construction industry. In the event there is an accident to the client’s home while working, the roofing company’s insurance will be activated instead of the homeowners insurance.
