For many years, the most popular turfgrass in Hawaii has been beautiful El Toro Zoysia. You’ve seen it all over the island — on residential lawns everywhere, as well as in commercial landscapes, new developments and even city parks.

And right now at Hawaiian Turfgrass, El Toro Zoysia is on sale — which gives you even more reason to plant this gorgeous variety in your own yard.

“This is just about the most homeowner-friendly grass on the market in Hawaii,” says Sean Fong, owner of Hawaiian Turfgrass. “It has a number of qualities and traits that make it practically ideal for conditions on Oahu.”

Ranked the best coarse- textured Zoysia variety by the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program for several years running, El Toro Zoysia was developed in 1986 by the University of California, Riverside. The medium-blade Zoysia Japonica grass outperforms other varieties in a number of areas.

“It’s superior in terms of resistance to drought, insects and disease,” says Fong. “It’s also known for being low-maintenance, which makes it really popular with homeowners. And families with kids and pets love it because it’s soft under bare feet and paws.”

El Toro Zoysia thrives in full sun. Fong, adds that five hours daily is optimal.

“If your lawn gets anything less than four hours of direct sun, you should use a shade-tolerant grass, such as our dwarf Captiva St. Augustine.”

He recommends reel-mowing a lawn planted with El Toro Zoysia about every one to two weeks, with the blade height set at three-quarters of an inch, and watering three or four times per week.

Another trait that sets this lovely grass apart from others: it’s extremely aggressive.

“As soon as El Toro Zoysia makes contact with the ground, it just explodes,” Fong remarks. “It only took about three months for Thomas Square to fill in completely.”

He’s referring, of course, to Thomas Square, the oldest city park in downtown Honolulu. Located between South Beretania and South King streets, the 6-and-a-half acre park has hosted a variety of cultural and community events over the years, including the King’s Runner 10K, La Hoihoi Ea and the Intertribal Powwow.

In May 2017, Hawaiian Turfgrass carefully resodded Thomas Square with El Toro Zoysia. After just a few months, the new grass was lush and healthy, providing a welcome update for the beautiful park.

“It’s been the most popular turfgrass in Hawaii for a couple of decades — with good reason,” says Fong.
