Running quietly in the attic of Pam Sato’s Mililani home is a breakthrough piece of technology in energy-efficient home cooling products. Unseen from the outside of the home, the QuietCool system draws hot air out of the living space through a ceiling intake while cooling both the home’s living space and attic at a fraction of the cost of air conditioning systems.

“Since I installed my Quiet-Cool, it’s been all I’ve used to cool my home and saved me money off my electrical bills,” says Sato. “I saved more when it came time to put in solar by installing fewer panels. I tell everyone about it; it’s amazing how it sucks the hot air right out of my home!”

The popularity of this alternative cooling system is growing as homeowners discover how effective it is. Throughout the state, more than 6,000 systems have been installed by homeowners taking steps toward in home comfort, fresh-air cooling and lower electrical bills.

“I run my Whole House Fan instead of my A/Candsavean average of $100 per month,” says Kumu Vasconcellos of Hawaii Kai. “It’s a great way to cool my town home.”

“Homeowners today are more aware of the need for energy efficiency and are actively looking for better ways to cool their homes,” says Al Whitworth of Island Cooling. “And QuietCool is a perfect fit for our island lifestyle. Rather than having to close windows and doors and hiding out with refrigerated air, this system takes advantage of healthy air-flow and allows us to live a more open life.”

Founded more than 10 years ago to bring energy efficient cooling solutions to Hawaii, Island Cooling is Hawaii’s distributor of Qui etCool. In addition to larger units for whole home cooling, the company also has bedroom-sized units for home offices and bedrooms and roof mounted systems for open beam and vaulted ceilings.

“QuietCool is designed to provide on-demand ventilation,” says Ivan Whitworth, a certified green professional with Island Cooling. “You can use it just as you would a ceiling fan, but since it’s taking the heat out of a home, it’s a lot more effective.”

Clayton Choi agrees. He installed a system in his Ewa Beach house and has been using it to cool his home ever since.
