You might not realize it, but you’ve probably seen — and admired — the most popular turfgrass in Hawaii.

Plantedallovertheislands, El Toro Zoysia is a medium-blade Zoysia Japonica grass that was developed in 1986 by the University of California, Riverside.

“El Toro Zoysia has been Hawaii’s most popular turf-grass for the past 15 or 20 years,” reports Sean Fong, owner of Hawaiian Turf-grass. “It’s absolutely an all-around homeowner-friendly grass.”

“All of the common areas in the new developments in Ewa and Kapolei are planted with El Toro Zoysia,” says Fong.

“Also, El Toro is very aggressive,” Fong adds. “As soon as it makes contact with the ground, it just explodes. It only took about three months for Thomas Square to fill in completely.”

“We keep our fields weed-free, mow all our fields with reel mowers, and we sell only mature grass,” says Fong. “Because of these practices, El Toro Zoysia, like our other varieties, will quickly root almost anywhere it’s planted.”
