It’s a gorgeous kitchen, the sort any avid home cook would envy.

The heart of a Kapahulu Avenue house built by Honolulu firm Rui Construction, this kitchen has plenty of counter space, all snowy white granite slabs and an easily maintainable floor of big ceramic tiles in a complementary shade. Stainless steel appliances are thoughtfully placed, and a stainless exhaust hood over the stove provides a nice retro vibe.

A half-dozen recessed lights and a trio of handsome frosted glass fixtures that hang from the cathedral ceiling provide great overhead illumination.

A lighted strip just above the toe kick at the bottom of each cabinet matches the lighting under the cupboards and provides illumination for lower storage; it’s a thoughtful addition that makes this room even more functional.

Then, what seems to be a bank of drawers and cupboards opens to reveal a delightful surprise.

“It’s a hidden walk-in storage pantry!” says Jon Xie, manager of Rui Building Supply, the construction company’s sister firm. “From the outside it looks like cabinets, but when you open the door, it leads into a walk-in storage space, just behind the kitchen wall. It was a pretty unique addition to the house.”

PROJECTS COMPLETED WITH SPEED AND PRECISION

Like all of Rui’s projects, the home on Kapahulu Avenue was constructed with breathtaking efficiency.

“We tore the old house down to the foundation, and built the new house from the ground up,” says Xie. “There were some delays with supply chains, but we managed to get it done within six or seven months.”

With Rui’s full-service approach, the construction company can manage all aspects of a new build or renovation, and the building supply company can provide many of the fittings that make a house feel like home. In the Kapahulu Avenue kitchen, for example, the tile flooring, granite countertops, sink, custom cabinets and lighting came from Rui’s showroom on Sand Island Access Road.

“We’re a one-stop shop, and we can do pretty much anything, from small renovations to huge projects,” says Xie. “We can help come up with the designs and ideas and use materials from our supply company when we build. Our clients don’t need to go to the hassle of finding licensed plumbers and electricians, because we can cover all of that.”
