It’s a sultry day in early July, and Jon Xie from Rui Building Supply is a bit out of breath when he answers his phone. In the background behind him is the unmistakable sound of men laboring to move something that is very heavy.

“We have a new shipment of manufactured quartz countertops that just arrived,” Xie says with excitement. “We’re unloading them now — lots of new patterns and designs in 26, 36 and 42 inches — and they’re just gorgeous.”

Created through a process that blends ground natural quartz with a tiny bit of polymer resin to bind it, quartz countertops are quite durable. They’re nonporous and easy to keep clean and free of bacteria and mold. They resist stains beautifully, too.

“You’ll want to use trivets or pads under hot pans, though, because those might leave marks,” advises Xie.
