The ‘design-build’ option
Last year, a family living in an older single-story home decided it was time to remodel, rebuild or move. Their children were growing up and they were running out of space. Moving was the least desirable option … they liked the neighborhood, which was convenient to schools, shopping and recreation, and had a “country” atmosphere. They were aware of Homeworks Construction as a builder and remodeler from newspaper and magazine articles. After checking out the company’s credentials and projects, they decided to arrange an appointment.
“After several meetings, it was clear that the owner was interested in working with us, and it was time to decide whether we could remodel cost-effectively or if rebuilding was the best option,” said Homeworks president and chief administrative officer Marshall Hickox. “We did an extensive inspection of the site and original home, and found the structure was not sound and had termite damage.
“Also, the house did not make the best use of the lot. We checked out sunlight and wind conditions on the property at various times of day to ensure that the orientation of the house would take the best advantage of natural light and ventilation. A new house could also be designed to access views of the wooded surroundings and provide venues for outdoor use.”
The old house was demolished in fall 2019, and the owners moved into their new home the following spring.
Homeworks produced a customized architectural plan taking into consideration lifestyle and current and future needs — while providing 35 percent more space. With an approximately 2,954-squarefoot interior, plus a covered lanai, the new home includes five bedrooms, three baths, a large open main living area, a custom kitchen designed by Homeworks award-winning designer Sean Bradshaw, laundry room and two-car garage with workshop space.
Established over two decades ago as a design-build firm, Homeworks provides “all design and construction services under one roof.” With approximately 1,000 new custom homes and remodels completed throughout Oahu, Homeworks is known for its experience and proficiency in every type of residential construction, from new custom rebuilds in urban neighborhoods to oceanside residences and vintage remodels.
