After a brief halt in operations that mirrored Oahu’s early pandemic response, Rui Construction is filling its schedule with new projects.

“We’re busy again, and we now have a waitlist for large renovations,” reports Jon Xie, who manages Rui Building Supply, the construction company’s sister firm.

Because the City & County’s permitting process was slowed by the pandemic, many homeowners have found that some projects had to be put on hold.

“We’re doing a lot of small renovations for homeowners who didn’t have time to plan big projects before the pandemic,” Jon says. “It’s a good time to get these things done if you’re working from home. You can be there and monitor progress.”

The sister company of Rui Building Supply (Rui Construction) is run by Xiao Rui “Ray” Xie, Jon’s father, who began his career two decades ago in Singapore as a construction worker. After he immigrated to the United States, Ray obtained a general contracting license, and gained a solid reputation for the quality of the homes he built. Eventually, he expanded his construction business to include a building supply company.

The two arms of the enterprise complement each other perfectly, according to Jon.

“Essentially, it’s a one-stop shop. If you need a house built or renovated, we can help with pre-estimates and layouts for kitchens and bathrooms, free of charge,” he explains. “We work directly with owners to design and build at the same time. And, our building supply company sells just about everything you might need for your project.”

He’s not exaggerating. In Rui’s showroom on Sand Island Access Road, packed with sales and bargains, you’ll find showers and vanities; apothecary cabinets; chrome and bronze towel racks, bars and rings; plus sinks and basins in porcelain and glass, available in a variety of styles.

There’s a great selection of quartz and granite counter-tops in more than a dozen shades, and a variety of LED light fixtures in both classic and modern styles.

Rui is also legendary among local construction professionals for terrific deals on cabinets and tile flooring. “Many of our clients have told us that the materials they want to order from big vendors aren’t available because of supply chain interruptions,” says Jon.

With decent stocks of inventory, the company can offer more than 4,000 square feet in many tile selections.

“If you want to cover a lot of space, we have large quantities available in plenty of styles. And there’s no waiting period; you can pick up right away,” Jon adds. “We have plenty of gorgeous frameless cabinets in stock as well.”
