A new custom home or major remodel by Homeworks Construction typically includes a new kitchen designed by Homeworks award-winning kitchen and bath designer Sean Bradshaw.

Recently named “Builder of the Year” by the Building Industry Association, Homeworks has designed and built more than 1,000 new and remodeled homes throughout Oahu over the past 20 years, winning numerous awards, including excellence in kitchen design.

The Homeworks designers and builders work as a team in collaboration with their client to implement the approved architectural plan for the new project. Bradshaw noted that the kitchen is the part of the house that generally involves the most client coordination. Meetings are scheduled at the Homeworks conference room to review plans and at the job-site to finalize the layout of the kitchen with regard to location of appliances, fixtures, plumbing, electrical outlets, cabinets, doors, windows, access to other rooms, and exterior, including lanai and garage.

“Usually there are more details involved in creating a new kitchen than any other room in the house, “Bradshaw said. “Before clients meet with me at the home to review the layout, or sit down with our specifications specialist Elyse Grable, chances are they have been shopping or searching on the internet…Elyse helps them refine their search and advises on quality and durability and what will work best with their budget. Just the appliances alone can represent hundreds of options.”

Bradshaw added that energy efficiency and age-friendly features are considerations that need to be addressed in the process, since they relate both to selections and design. He also noted that changing trends in kitchen design affect clients’ choices — trends involving preferences in colors, surface materials, cabinet styles, and lighting. Bradshaw provided examples of three kitchens in homes designed and built by Homeworks that reflect recent trends: The photos accompanying this article are described as follows:

Photo 1: “A ‘white on white’ kitchen in one of our remodeled homes features a large island, one that’s big enough to seat the whole family,” Bradshaw said. “The owner wanted to be able to converse with the family and guests while preparing food. The kitchen has a sleek modern look with straight lines and cool colors. The cabinets are a polished white acrylic, counters are a solid white quartz, and the flooring is a gray toned LVT.”

Photo 2: “Another kitchen with a calming effect features cabinets that have been painted white, Cambria quartz counters, and a glass tile back splash. We remodeled the existing kitchen to create a more open and inviting space as well as a more usable counter and dining island.”

Photo 3: “The bold and fun island in a Homeworks new build in Enchanted Lake features cabinets painted blue with Craftsman beadboard doors, while the perimeter cabinets are painted white with shaker style doors for the classic look.”
