The winner of numerous awards for excellence in design and construction of new and remodeled homes, Homeworks Construction has been providing superior service and quality workmanship to clients throughout Oahu for more than 20 years. Homeworks projects range from additions and renovations to complete “ground up” construction of new homes, from “budget builds” to luxurious residences.

Marshall Hickox, company president/chief administrative officer and president-elect of the Building Industry Association of Hawaii, credits Homeworks’ success to its application of the “design/ build” process together with teamwork.

“Our company slogan, ‘All design and construction services under one roof,’ is actually a statement of how we operate,” Hickox said. “From planning and permitting to final finishes, our company specialists work as a team … and the client is also very much a part of that team. Clients always know whom they will be dealing with and we are available to them every step of the way.”

Hickox noted that although the Homeworks team includes architects and an award-winning kitchen and bath designer, the company is open to working with other specialists representing the client at various phases of the project. An example is the “Iosivas Revival” project, a “ground-up” restoration of a Hawaii Kai canal-front home (shown above), in which Homeworks collaborated with architect Wade Y. Terao and interior designer Shari Saiki and received the Carl Reppun Award in the 2018 BIA-Hawaii Building Industry Design & Construction Awards program. This award is presented annually to a small-to-medium-size builder whose work exemplifies excellence in remodeling. The judges’ statement noted “Elegant design and exemplary construction,” as well as “Creativity and attention to detail.”

Hickox cited a new custom oceanfront home at Laie (top and right photos) as a “textbook” example of the design/build process. The client, who owned a vacant 12,000-square-foot lot with an existing house, chose Homeworks to design and build a new home that was both upscale and elegant, but would also function as a “beach house.” Its more than 2,500 square feet of interior living space is augmented by 300 square feet of lanais overlooking the swimming pool, gardens and ocean.

“The client entertained often and wanted an open free flowing design but also private areas for his overnight guests,” Hickox said. “To accomplish this we designed the house with a central courtyard that could either be opened up to the main house or provide guests with their own private space. This space would also be usable for outside dining sheltered from the offshore winds.

“The downstairs guest suite has direct access to an outdoor Bali shower with custom wood doors that can be used in complete privacy when returning to the house from the beach or swimming pool. It was also important that the home would have durable, maintainable finishes to withstand the salt environment.”
