Lucky string of coincidences leads to success
Kunkel Works is a small business, importing aluminum carports, patio covers, gates and fences from Japan.
“It’s been one lucky coincidence after another,” said owner Maggie Kunkel.
“The product appeals to me in many ways,” added Kunkel. “One, it’s amazingly good looking in any kind of weather, which appeals to my artistic side. Two, it is immensely practical, creating new living spaces and protecting from elements and intruders. And three, it’s so amazingly well made … authentic Japanese extruded aluminum and technical skills honed over the past 43 years. Need I say more?”
In 1994, Kunkel started her business in Hawaii as the graphic designer and art director. In 2004, she stumbled upon the Japanese products when she found a flyer in her hedge one day. She called the business owner to suggest a graphic makeover. After experiencing the product firsthand, she decided to sell the Japanese products.
In the beginning, the products had to first be bought locally in Japan. Then, they were privately sent over to Hawaii. Finally, the Japanese manufacturer Sankyo Tateyama decided to allow direct sales to the international markets.
Kunkel Works became the direct distributor for Hawaii in 2008. Being able to buy directly from Japan, Kunkel Works has the opportunity to reduce prices and have more control over all the details.
Kunkel enjoys a close connection to her Japanese counterpar ts and fellow international distributors. The service she receives from Japan is immaculate. Here at home, Kunkel Works gets help from independent contractors, who install the products for the customers.
Kunkel loves being her own boss, of course, but most of all she loves providing significant home improvements for her customers.
