The BIA Renaissance Building and Remodeling Awards, established in 1986, celebrates excellence in design and construction of new and remodeled projects in Hawaii. Competing categories include New and Remodeled Residential Building, New and Remodeled Commercial Building, Kitchen & Bath, Landscape, Outdoor Living, High Rise Lifestyle Residential, High Rise Lifestyle Commercial, Public Works, Hawaii BuiltGreen™ and Historical.

The 29th annual Awards Ceremony was held May 27-28, and entrants from Maui and Oahu represented an exciting year of statewide participation. The entries were judged on creativity, use of materials, environmental and sustainability, functionality, design principles, value, interior space, overall quality and workmanship.

The highlight of the awards ceremony was the recognition of the top four Overall Grand Awards and the Carl Reppun Award.

Today’s column features the winner of the Overall Grand Award in the New Residential Division, Cleve & Levin Inc. for “Wathen Residence.”

A showplace for entertaining, this residence offers professional working spaces and private living quarters with breathtaking originality. Sustainable and recycled teak from Bali is used throughout the home, which is beautifully enhanced with teak and travertine flooring, marble and granite countertops.

Custom teak carvings are scaled to the high ceilings and many customized spaces. The fabulous outdoor entertainment space flows from the interior and comfortably hosts 55 guests. The stunning kitchen is designed for the diverse needs of a catering staff with separate areas for food and dessert preparations, beverages and a pantry.
