Just as Thomas Jefferson noted, “No occupation is so delightful to me as the culture of the earth, and no culture comparable to that of the garden,” caring for plants or growing your own flowers is very satisfying in so many ways. Couple that with the soothing sounds of water and you’ve instantly created a tranquil oasis for your home.

Lilies, lotuses, and other water plants provide a calming beauty that turns any space into a tranquil retreat. Whether you have a backyard pond or a small lanai, anyone can enjoy the beauty of a water garden. Water plants thrive in Hawaii, with the Islands’ year-round sunlight and mild climate. Contrary to what their stunning beauty might imply, they are fairly simply to maintain for experts and novices alike.

Geobunga’s staff members welcome the public, including gardening aficionados of all ages and skill levels, to join them this Saturday, May 25, for a free public seminar entitled Water Lilies and Water Gardens, the seminar will be held at 9 a.m. in Salt Lake (4299 Lawehana St. across from Target) and at 2 p.m. in Waimanalo (41-829 Kakaina St).

The interactive workshop will teach attendees how to capture the living beauty of water lilies in a water garden and provide tips on how to properly pot and fertilize a lily. A variety of water plants will be available, and you’ll learn how to pick the right plant for your lifestyle. Within four to eight weeks, your lily will bloom, and within a year, the lily will generate another lily or two that you can then replant yourself.

“Water lilies are so simple to care for — I periodically snip off old flowers and fertilize monthly,” said Andrew Dedrick, executive director of Geobunga. “Anyone can enjoy the beauty of these plants, anywhere they have access to sunlight.”

Space for the free seminar is limited and reservations are highly recommended. Visit www.geobunga.com to register, email info@geobunga.com or call 422-4567.
