Humble beginnings
Founded in 2006 by owner David Staub, Tropical Garden Accents began humbly out of David’s home in Waimanalo. As a world traveler, he found beauty in garden accents from Asia, and decided to merge those with the tropical garden decor in Hawaii. From David’s home to an outlet in Waimanalo, the company’s rapid expansion created an opportunity to move to another area. In 2010, just four short years after opening, the thriving pottery outlet expanded to its 70,000-square-foot Kapolei location, offering a shopping experience with wholesale prices and an endless inventory. The property is bigger, the selection is bigger and the prices are smaller.

As the largest importer of ceramics in the state, Kapolei’s Tropical Garden Accents is in a class of its own when it comes to volume and variety. The garden center’s bulk purchasing system allows it to pass on major savings — and the enormous weekly shipments ensure a constant influx of new and different products. As a company standard, the pricing at Tropical Garden Accents is always 35 percent off retail. There also is always an expansive clearance area with discounts well above 50 percent.
Walk through the gates at Tropical Garden Accents and see its expansive yard with rows and rows of pottery. The expansive yard is truly inspirational, and the layout makes it easy to explore the latest additions. It’s easy to spend hours rummaging for treasures. There also is a shady tropical showroom with ideas and displays, seating to take a quick break and two friendly, docile dogs to greet you by wagging their tails. You’re likely to run into David himself, because after all these years; he’s so passionate about what he does that he’s there every day with the rest of the helpful staff.

Happy endings
For six years, David has successfully worked to become the largest importer of ceramics in the state. His blood, sweat and tears have gone into every inch of Tropical Garden Accents, and that dedication shows in the quality of service and products at the outlet. Many clients know David by name and continue to visit and see the progress of his business, which has overcome the trials of a tough economy and several relocations.
This year, David has decided it will be his last. Tropical Garden Accents will close its doors for good June 1. David has plans to sell the remainder of his inventory at rock bottom prices for the next two months and vacate the Kapolei outlet for good. They are overwhelmingly grateful for the support they’ve received over the years and hope that everyone will visit the Kapolei outlet one last time before they go. As for David’s retirement plans, he’ll sail off into the sunset — literally. He plans to chart new territory in life and on the open water while sailing and seeking the next big idea.
Going-out-of-business sale
Tropical Garden Accents’ final sale will be from April 1 to May 31, 2012. Clearance prices will be 50 to 70 percent off and all sales are final.
