Zeon Zoysia has been described as “the most playable fairway turf on the market.” According to golfers, Zeon Zoysia’s tight- ly packed blades hold a ball up almost like a tee. Homeowners appreciate that density because it inhibits weed growth.
Developed by turfgrass expert David Doguet of Bladerunner Farms in Poteet, Texas, Zeon Zoysia was bred from zoy- siagrass selections collected around the Pacific Rim. Luxurious and verdant, the grass was featured on the golf course de- signed for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. It is also used at the Tiger Woods- designed Bluejack National, as well as at Grove XXIII, the Florida course fronted by basketball’s Michael Jordan, named for the 23 he wore on his uniform.

“This variety needs little water and fer- tilizer,” says Fong. “It does best in full sun and thrives with five or more hours of di- rect sunlight each day.”
Lawns planted with Zeon Zoysia should be mown every 1-2 weeks with a reel mower set at three-quarters of an inch, he notes. “It’s more disease and insect-resistant than other varieties. And because it’s salt-tolerant, it grows well near beaches. Zeon Zoysia is really great for Hawaii — and perfect for homeown- ers who want a lawn that will be the pride of the neighborhood.”

“The old Zoysia grasses, like Emerald Zoysia and the others, were very hard to mow and maintain,” says Sean Fong, owner of Hawaiian Turfgrass. “Nobody wanted to sit or walk on them, because they were so coarse.”
