Clean your solar panels the right way
With the recent rise in electrical cost, homeown-
ers are realizing the need to clean and maintain their solar systems. Cleaning your solar panels the wrong way can void your warranty and is very dangerous; hiring a professional is usually rec- ommended. If you are hiring a professional or doing it your- self, here are five things to consider when getting your solar panels cleaned.
NEVER PRESSURE WASH A SOLAR PANEL
Using high pressure while cleaning solar panels can cause micro-fracturing on the solar panels and can void the manufacturer’s production warranty.
NEVER USE ANY HARD CHEMICALS
Chemicals that are too aggressive can remove the ARC coating on your panels. This coating increases the ef- ficiency of your solar panels. Using the wrong chemicals
can also void the produc- tion warranty from your so- lar manufacture.
NEVER USE TAP WATER
It is recommended to only use filtered water; using normal tap water will leave calcium and other minerals (hard water) on the glass of the panel and decrease the
efficiency of the solar panel, and is expensive to remove.
NEVER WALK ON THE SOLAR PANELS
Anyone cleaning a solar panel should have a telescop- ic pole that can reach any part of the solar system without needed to walk on them.
Walking on the solar panels
can be a safety hazard, and it can cause micro-fractures in the solar cells that can cause permanent damage to the solar panel.
SYSTEM INSPECTIONS
Most professional solar panel cleaning companies will offer an inspection with cleaning, which ensures your
system is working and can suggestanypreventivemain- tenance. Most homeowners and people not specialized
in solar panel cleaning lack the knowledge or have the specialized equipment to inspect the system.
