Kapahulu home rebuild moves forward
Asingle-family home rebuild in Kapa- hulu is among ap-
proximately a dozen new custom homes designed and built by Homeworks Construction in East Oahu neighborhoods over the past year. The rebuild re- places a 79-year-old family home on a 4,800-square- foot lot on Edna Street, one of Kapahulu’s many streets named for members of the kamaaina Castle family. The James Castle family resi- dence, located oceanfront on Kalakaua Avenue, gave the name to one of Waiki-
ki’s popular surfbreaks, “Castles.”
Lying between Kaimuki, Waikiki and Diamond Head, Kapahulu comprises a com- mercial district running along Kapahulu Avenue and a single-family home neighborhood area, which was subdivided in the mid 1900s into residential lots ranging from approximately 2,000 to 6,000 square feet. Homes are a mix of the origi- nal one-story frame struc- tures surrounded by gardens and shade trees, and new remodels and rebuilds that generally maximize use of
