Rebuilding a dream home
Part one of a series
The owners of a family home built in an idyllic setting in the back of-
Manoa Valley in1969 are re- placing it with a new custom home designed and built by Homeworks Construc- tion. The 7,750-square-foot property borders a lower, wooded slope of Tantalus.
“We completed demoli- tion of the original house in late October followed by grading and preparation of the site for the foundation (see photo), which was a challenge due to the slope of the property, daily rain- fall and limited access due to lack of street parking,” says Sylvio Boucher, Homeworks Construction president and chief of field operations.
“The old single-wall house was a 1,500-square-foot post- and-pier structure with a carport, both damaged by termite infestation and water infiltration. Standing water in the backyard was a major problem due to large amounts of rainwater run- ning down the mountain and collecting on the ground. We solved that problem by rais- ing the new foundation (see photo), a solid waterproof concrete slab and diverting the rainwater away from the new residence and down to the street.
