You might not realize it, but you’ve prob- ably seen — and ad-
mired — the most popular turfgrass in Hawaii.
Planted all over the islands, El Toro Zoysia is a medium- blade Zoysia Japonica grass that was developed in 1986 by the University of Califor- nia, Riverside.
“El Toro Zoysia has been Hawaii’s most popular turf- grass for the past 15 or 20 years,” reports Sean Fong, owner of Hawaiian Turf- grass. “It’s absolutely an all-around homeowner- friendly grass.”
There’s good reason for its popularity: El Toro Zoy- sia was ranked the best coarse-textured zoysia va- riety by the National Turf- grass Evaluation Program for several years, outper- forming others in a number of areas, including drought and shade tolerance, re- duced thatch, and insect and disease resistance.
Known for being low- maintenance, El Toro Zoy- sia should be reel-mowed every one to two weeks, with the blade height set
at three-quarters of an inch and watered three or four times per week.
Though El Toro Zoysia has long been the standard grass for Honolulu home lawns, it’s also popular in commercial
landscapes and new devel- opments like Hoopili.
“All of the common areas in the new developments in Ewa and Kapolei are planted with El Toro Zoysia,” says Fong.
And with six and a half acres of lush, beautiful, bright green grass, historic Thomas Square in Honolulu is a perfect place to check out El Toro Zoysia. Planted by Hawaiian Turfgrass in May 2017, the new grass provided a spectacular re-
juvenation for Hawaii’s old- est park.
