HAWAII RENOVATION 5
      BY CAROLINE WRIGHT
The new home is hand- some and inviting, nes- tled snugly among its
neighbors in a comfortable Punahou neighborhood.
Inside, visitors are wel- comed into a bright and spacious kitchen. A cathedral ceiling with exposed beams, all a soft snowy white, opens to a pair of recessed lights. The effect is gentle illumi- nation of every inch of the lovely room. Plank flooring in warm walnut provides country comfort in this urban setting. A farmhouse sink and a suspended pair of vintage “Edison-style” globe LED lights add a rustic touch to the scene. There’s plenty of
space to work in this kitchen, plenty of storage space in the gleaming white and plenty of room for leisurely dining, too, at the gorgeous quartz breakfast counter.
And that’s just for starters. A tour through the rest of the house reveals competitive quality and multiple creative touches, all visible even to the casual observer. This hand- some Punahou home is yet another excellent example of the fine workmanship deliv- ered by Ray Xie and his team at Rui Construction.
GREAT AMERICAN SUCCESS STORY
Twenty-five years ago, Xiao Rui “Ray” Xie began his construction career in
Singapore, starting out as an apprentice and gradually moving up to foreman. When he decided to immigrate to the United States in pursuit of a new way of life for him- self and his family, Xie began writing his own great Ameri- can success story.
In his earliest days on Oahu, Xie worked for small local builders as a laborer, moving up the ladder until he’d proved himself at his trade. Eventually, he ob- tained a general contracting license, becoming known in the community for the qual- ity of the homes he built.
Within a few years, it only seemed logical to launch a building supply company, to offer the kind of quality
materials he knew his clients wanted at competitive pric- es. The two arms of the enter- prise complement each other perfectly, according to Jon Xie, manager of Rui Building Supply and Ray’s son.
“We’re basically a one-stop shop,” Jon explains. “Anything you want to do, we can help you. If you’re doing a reno- vation and need supplies, or if you shop for materials and find that you need help with your project, we can as- sist you. We’re very flexible, whether your project is big or small. And one of our main specialties is custom work.”
MAKING A HOUSE FEEL LIKE HOME
Thanks to Rui’s full-service approach, the construction
company can manage all aspects of a new build or renovation, and the supply company can provide the fit- tings that make a house feel like home: heavy porcelain tile flooring; gorgeous gran- ite countertops cut to order; and handsome, solid wood cabinets and vanities.
The Sand Island Access Road showroom also offers sinks in porcelain, stainless steel and glass; ceramic tiles both small and large; sturdy
and handsome vinyl plank flooring; and LED light fix- tures in a vast range of clas- sic and contemporary styles.
“Our materials are used by many of our clients on the construction side, so it makes sense for us to offer decent quality,” comments Jon.
Specializing in two-story, single-family homes, the con- struction company launched by Ray is known for speed as well as quality.
“Usually we’re able to complete houses within six months of breaking ground,” Jon says with pride. “Every- one works fast, and often we work weekends as well.”
