he Kaneohe Congre- gational Church is the oldest Protestant
church in Windward Oahu. The Rev. Benjamin Wyman Parker,whoarrivedinHawaii in 1833 from New England, established the church, which has gone by a few other names over its long history.
The church was granted seven acres of land in 1849 by King Kamehameha III as part of the land divisions under the Great Mahele.The initial structure was a hale pili — or grass hut — that evolved into other wooden
structures over time. The current wooden structure was completed in 1956 and
required some much needed attention to restore it.
The church’s deacon, Ralph Kanoho, is leading the renovation as project man- ager. Renovations are nearly complete and were made possible with labor and dona- tions from churchgoers and community partners like Ply- wood Hawaii.
Plywood Hawaii, Hawaii’s largest and most complete inventor y of plywood and structural panels, is supply- ing all the finished wood for the project. Sapele — also
known as African mahogany — was chosen for the proj- ect because of its rich, warm finish.
