An important first step in learning about the home building process and deter- mining what can be done to enhance one’s existing home is to attend one of HK Construction’s seminars.
HK Construction is slated to hold three seminars this month (check website for up- to-date seminar information): Wednesday, May 17, 6-8 p.m. at Pearl Country Club;Thurs- day, May 18, 6-8 p.m. at the Neal Blaisdell Center ; and Saturday, May 20, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the American Savings Financial Ser vices Center in Kahala. Questions will be an- swered at that time and those interested may also set up a free on-site assessment.
Local residents have be- come accustomed to Ha- waii’s unique ohana culture in which family members care for young and elderly rela- tives throughout multi-gen- erational households. How- ever, while families remain close and grow as unit, the arrangement can also cre- ate added stress and strain relationships if a home is not comfor table for all involved. To assist homeowners with making these arrangements livable and feasible, HK Con- struction builds and reno-
vates homes for customers looking to better utilize inte- rior space to accommodate growing families.
The aforementioned ohana-centric projects en- compass children moving back home with kids of their own as well as focus on allowing older residents to “age in place” by creating safe environments for the el-
derly without sacrificing their freedom or restricting mobil- ity. During a recent project, HK Construction worked with a family composed of four generations — includ- ing children, their parents, an aunty as well as grandpar- ents — who all live under the same roof and needed to revamp the home to meet their unique needs.
