S. Tanaka Construction is a design-build contractor that specializes in rebuilding brand new homes and large additions. It is an established company that’s been in business locally for 30 years.

The company has recently completed a 3,700 square foot brand new home featuring four bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, a kitchen and a wet bar. This home, located in Hawaii Kai, is considered to be a multigenerational home, meaning it was designed for related family members sharing the whole house space.

Typically, when multigeneration families come to S. Tanaka Construction with their design ideas, they separate their living areas by floor. This particular home was slightly different in its design, and it worked perfectly for the situation the homeowners were in. Here’s how: The Sueda family have owned and occupied their property in Hawaii Kai for more than 50 years. The house was aging, and they struggled with the decision of whether to renovate the home or rebuild it, as many families do when dealing with this situation.

The house was currently occupied solely by Mrs. Elsie Sueda, and the decision to rebuild was made when it was known that her son and his family would be moving back home with her. Now, this new home would have to accommodate Sueda, her son, plus his wife and their two children. Here is when they decided to research contractors, S. Tanaka Construction being one of them.

The Sueda family worked with owner Ryan Tanaka on the design of their home. Collaboratively, they came up with the concept of giving Sueda her own personal area of the house that consisted of one bedroom, one bathroom, living room and wet bar, but didn’t take up an entire floor. This left plenty of square footage for her son and his family to design their own living space that, upon walking in, still feels like a single-family dwelling.

After several meetings working on the perfect design for their home, the Suedas decided to move forward with S. Tanaka Construction after attending one of its open houses and seeing the quality workmanship of the company’s homes. Now, the Suedas have graciously allowed S. Tanaka Construction to open up their home for others who may be in the same situation to view.

This open house is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 11 from noon to 5 p.m. Please check the company website for updates.

This will be a private open house, so appointments will need to be made in order to view it. The Suedas are eager to move into their new space, therefore this house will be shown for only one day, so call S. Tanaka Construction at its office to get on the schedule!
