When it comes to PV (solar photovoltaic), there are many things to consider. Here are some frequently asked customer questions — and Risource Energy’s answers.

Q:We installed solar photovoltaic and have been reading in the news about Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) and their proposed changes. Should I be concerned that my rates will change?

A: We also have been reading about this. Right now, the electricity rates are not changing. HECO submitted a proposal and still have to see what the Public Utilities Commission will do. They rejected HECO’s original plan, and this is the second one they submitted. Like you, we in the solar industry are also waiting for the outcome.

Q: So I have solar, now what do I do?

A: After Risource Energy installs your system, you don’t have to worry. We offer a very generous and unique annual maintenance, cleaning and inspection program to our customers. Every year we send out our own technicians — not third party vendors — to professionally inspect, maintain and clean our customers’ solar systems. And, we will do this for free for 10 years. We also provide a 25-year warranty on all Solar Frontier panels, so you don’t have to worry.

Q: I installed a photovoltaic system on my home when it first came on the market. Now, I am selling my home. How does my PV system make a difference on home value?

A: Congratulations on being one of the first to take advantage of the generous federal and state tax credits. When you are selling your home, the PV system definitely should be included in the value of the assets. A lot depends on how you financed your system. If you paid upfront, either through a loan or financing package, you should include it as an asset and part of the full value of the home. If you are leasing your system, you should contact the company that installed it.

Q: Every solar company I call tells me they have the best, newest technology. Why is yours better?

A: Our panels generate more electricity than factory specifications because of “light soaking effect” after initial exposure to sunlight. They are the next generation of PV panels. On a per-watt basis, our panels deliver more electricity than other panels — at zero additional cost. Also, our panels deliver up to 14 percent more electricity.

Comparing on a watt-to-watt basis (e.g. 200 watt panel to 200 watt panel), Risource Energy panels — made in Japan by Solar Frontier — outperform competitor panels in real world climate situations. Solar Frontier, the world’s largest manufacturer of CIS panels, has developed proprietary technology and design that enables this superior performance.

Call Risource Energy to discuss any questions or concerns. Customer service really is the company’s No. 1 priority.
