Homeworks Construction’s first projects in Honolulu were budget priced single family home rebuilds and remodels in older neighborhoods, primarily Kalihi and Kaimuki. Over two decades, the company has completed more than 1,000 projects that cover the spectrum from budget to luxury in neighborhoods throughout Oahu. The company has won awards in the National Kitchen & Bath Association design competitions, BIA Renaissance and Parade of Homes, and is ranked among the nation’s “Top 500 Remodelers” by Qualified Remodeler Magazine.

CEO Jim Byxbee established Homeworks as a design/build firm. Already an experienced builder when he arrived in Hawaii from the East Coast, he recognized a need for a company that had the capability to provide “all design and construction services under one roof,” which became the Homeworks slogan.

“The consumer benefits from the design/build approach to a project — whether a new custom home, addition or renovations,” Byxbee said. “The entire scope of work is laid out in initial meetings and estimated costs for all phases of the job provided, from planning and permitting to demolition, framing and interior and exterior finishes. A project coordinator is assigned to oversee the job and ensure that work is proceeding on schedule. Because he or she is part of a team, they are able to supply information to the client in a timely manner, which is not always the case when multiple companies are involved in a project.”

A past president of the Building Industry Association, Byxbee emphasizes the importance of consumer education.

He launched the “Build New Or ReDo” seminar series in 2001. The Build New Or ReDo radio show, broadcast Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m. on KHVH AM830, has been on the air continuously since 2005.

Six years ago, Homeworks purchased an older two-story building at 2111 S. Beretania St. and totally remodeled it inside and out. Homeworks’ offices and conference rooms are on the second floor; a showroom on the ground floor is the venue for the free Build New Or ReDo seminars, presented on the first Tuesday of the month from 6 to 8 p.m. For information and reservations for the May 6 seminar, call 955-2777.
