Ron D. of Ron D Electrical Service LLC in Waipahu credits his mom and his wife, Elizabeth, for giving him his positive, generous attitude, and for helping him build his business into the success it is today.
“Both my mom and dad came from the Philippines, and they divorced when I was very young,” recounted Ron, “so my mom, who was a nurse and who had to work 12-hour shifts, basically raised me and my brother as a single parent. We were on welfare and grew up with nothing.
“So when I got my first job as an electrician and I found such work as digging trenches so physically exhausting and wanted to quit, she was the one who encouraged me to stick with it, to give it a chance; the day-to-day hardships I was experiencing as a young worker were nothing compared to what she’d gone through to raise us alone.
“I found that very inspiring as I started my own business with only a two-man crew. I’m proud to say that we’ve now grown to 15, including office staff.”
Ron also looks for this sort of hard-working, positive attitude in his electricians. “I can teach anyone the trade, but not how to be a hard worker or to have a good attitude. All my guys are very reliable, responsible, and easy-going. I don’t even need to check on them. And at least one worker has been with me since the beginning, in 2005.”
And his mother’s role model translates to Ron’s commitment to community service and concern for the customer. “I think it was in 2007 that we donated about $25,000 in labor, vehicles and materials to the TV show ‘Extreme Makeover Home Edition’ for a home in Kalihi,” recalled Ron. “We worked non-stop, from 10 p.m. on Wednesday to 12 noon on Saturday, crawling under the house in the rain!
“Then in 2012 we donated about $6,000 in time and materials to HUGS (Help, Understanding & Group Support), which assists families with seriously ill children, for lighting in its parking lot.
“Sometimes people need help and you just have to give from the heart.”
Ron D. is also concerned when he hears about customers not being treated fairly, such as being charged $1,500-$1,700 per solar panel (Ron normally only charges $1,100 per panel and is having a special during the month of March that discounts that price even further to only $950).
As 1st Class Solar, Ron’s company uses only the best materials — Solar World panels (“the most efficient panels out there”) and Enphase inverters, both with 25-year warranties.
