With the solar industry booming, experts will tell you that one of the keys to upgrading your house with a clean, green solar system is to make sure you get quality installation.

Andrew Yani, Bonterra Solar’s founder and principal, wholeheartedly agrees.

“To install a great solar system, you’ve got to have a great team on the ground, or rather, on the roof!” Yani said.

Trained, experienced installers

Bonterra Solar is one of the fastest-growing solar companies in Hawaii. Every day it sends out highly trained teams, able to handle everything from a basic water-heater system setup to sophisticated solar photovoltaic (PV) installations, that can meet all of a home’s electricity needs.

The installation crews form an ohana, said Bonterra partner and general contractor Kohl Christensen. “These guys work together like a family. They watch out for each other because safety is essential when working on a roof,” he noted.

A Punahou graduate and big wave surfer, 34-year-old Christensen join-ed Bonterra after in-stalling his own photo-voltaic system on his North Shore organic farm.

“Surfing brings you close to nature and solar energy borrows from nature to power our lives,” he said.

Safety

Steve Valentin, 26, is operations manager. He does everything from design to permitting to overseeing installation. He’s also an ocean lifeguard so it’s no surprise that he’s Bonterra’s safety officer.

“We take safety very seriously,” Valentin said. “Any time we are working more than 6 feet high — which is just about all the time — we work with full protective gear including harnesses and lanyards.”

Quality workmanship

Forty-three-year-old installer Richard Martocci has done more than 400 solar installations in a single year! He says install teams’ quality workmanship shines through both on the roof and off.

“We live a few miles from each other, we surf the same spots,” Martocci said. “We work hard and then get together in our free time for family barbecues.”

“It’s that kind of family spirit that makes Bonterra Solar special,” said Andrew Yani. “I think our customers realize solar installation, for us, is more than just a job.”
