Is what to buy for senior family members holding up completion of your Christmas gift list? Homeworks Construction president Jim Byxbee has a suggestion for gifts that will both please and benefit Mom and Dad, as well as any older family members of the household.

“Consider updating fixtures and furnishings in the kitchen and bath that will make these rooms more age-friendly,” Byxbee said. “For example, you could upgrade kitchen work areas and elevate them to more comfortable heights. New cabinets with shelves that are more accessible could also make working in the kitchen easier for seniors with limited mobility and eliminate the need to climb on a stool or chair to reach needed items, which can be hazardous.

“These improvements also apply to bathrooms. Age-friendly bathtubs and toilets are available and becoming increasingly popular as the population ages,” he said.

Byxbee pointed out that any major renovations or additions would probably require extensions into the new year, as well as those involving advance ordering and shipment from out-of-state. He added that Homeworks Construction designers are available for free consultation on-site or in the Homeworks Construction conference room.

The next Homeworks Construction free seminar will be held at the Homeworks Construction showroom on Tuesday, Dec. 5 from 6 to 8 p.m., and will focus on Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) and include information on planning and designing senior-friendly ADUs. The seminar will be hosted by Homeworks Construction sales coordinator Kim Green, a certified aging-in-place specialist.

For more information on the seminar or to arrange an appointment for a free consultation in the Homeworks Construction showroom at 2111 S. Beretania St., call 955-2777.
