As walk-in bathtubs have continued to gain popularity, new styles, sizes, accessories and features also have become available. Tropical Plumbing & Bath introduced new American-made brands of walk-in bathtubs in Hawaii eight years ago and is today the leader in sales, serv ice and installation of walk-in bathtubs and showers.

Company president Charlie Beeck, a Building Industry Association Re-modeler of the Year, said the walk-in bathtub is now being routinely specified in bathroom remodeling and additions in multigenerational homes.

“People today are very health conscious, they know the importance of diet and exercise in maintaining good health at all ages,” Beeck said. “The segment of the population that we refer to as the ‘baby boomers’ is now aging and also concerned about convenience and safety in the home. Walk-in bathtubs are seen as a good investment in their future and that of aging family members; anyone in the home who might have to deal with a loss of mobility.”

Beeck noted that walk-in bathtubs also support independent living among older members of the household who may need assistance with bathing in a standard tub. Such accessories as grab bars, seats, head rests, easy-turn lever-style faucets and built-in or hand-held showers are standard features. There also are models that provide hydrotherapy to soothe tired muscles and soak away stiffness and stress.
