This is the second story in a two-part series.
Enlarging and modernizing this 30-year-old Makikilo home included designing and building an all new kitchen. Homeworks Construction kitchen and bath designer Sean Bradshaw worked closely with the owners to create a kitchen that suits their lifestyle and features many owner-specified details.
The original kitchen of approximately 150 square feet was enlarged to 190 square feet. Previously closed off, it now opens to a new dining area in the great room.
Due to the expansion of the home’s second floor space, by approximately 200 square feet, it was necessary to work around new structural posts and beams, which presented a challenge for the designer. “We put in a large walk-in pantry, which serves to conceal the new structural supports,” said Bradshaw. “Storage was a concern of the owners, so by taking advantage of this space we were able to provide additional shelves for canned and dry goods, as well as space for cleaning implements and materials.
“They also wanted ample cabinet and counter space, far more than they had in the original kitchen. The cabinets are solid cherrywood with a chestnut stain. Those over the sink are still awaiting side panels and crown molding.
“The peninsula, which is close to 9 feet, has ample seating for the family. The granite countertops pick up the warm shade of brown of the cabinets, and beige tones of the 20 by 20 inch porcelain tile flooring. Three types of lighting were installed in the kitchen: pendant over the peninsula, recessed in the ceiling and under the cabinets. The client specified a double wall oven and separate cooktop with a granite backsplash.”
Bradshaw also remodeled the two upstairs bathrooms, one of which, the master bath, was enlarged and reconfigured to accommodate a walk-in tiled shower; a tub/shower combination was installed in the second bathroom.
“We touched every area of this house,” Bradshaw added. “It now has the feeling of a brand new, custom home.”
