The Building Industry Association of Hawaii’s BIG Home Building & Remodeling Show will be Aug. 9-11 at Neal S. Blaisdell Center. There, homeowners can meet with construction and design expert, Homeworks Construction. Homeowners can attend its seminars to learn tips to maximize their home and renovation projects. These are the five key strategies that will be covered in the upcoming seminars.

Plan
“All successful projects begin with a clear vision,” states Marshall Hickox, president of Homeworks Construction.

Define what you aim to achieve, including specific features you want to include, and your vision for style. Having these concepts solidified will guide decisions and keep the project focused. Distinguish between needs and wants, prioritizing features that are crucial for functionality and comfort. By setting clear goals and priorities, you can make informed decisions that align with your budget and timeline.

Budget
“Budgeting is a fundamental aspect of any project,” Hickox says. “We work with clients to develop a comprehensive budget that includes all possible expenses.”

He adds, “We will cover how budgets and allowances work, enabling homeowners to make informed decisions before signing any contracts.”

An allowance is a specified budget that is set aside for materials that have not been selected at the time that the building contract is signed — covering items like cabinets, flooring and appliances. Learn also how to budget for unforeseen issues that may arise. A well-planned budget helps avoid financial stress and ensures that the project can be completed without compromising quality.

Hire professionals
The success of your project largely depends on the professionals you hire. Checking portfolios, licensing and references is key, but you must first understand what you are looking for in the process. Learn how to do research and identify red flags early by using organizations like the Better Business Bureau and Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.

Quality
Skilled workmanship and quality materials reduce maintenance costs and increase the value of homes in the long term.

“‘Building homes with better materials’ is our motto and we’ll share why this decision has contributed to repeat customers and our longevity as a company,” Hickox says.

Understand the pitfalls of using cheap, as well as “new” and untested materials.

Involvement
“If you can visit the site frequently to monitor progress, that’s great. Video chats and daily progress dashboards are also available through some builders, but whether you communicate virtually or in-person, stay involved,” Hickox emphasizes.

This hands-on approach helps catch problems early and ensures the project stays on track. Be flexible to adapt to any changes or challenges that may occur. Plus, make sure to promptly address any questions from your contractor to keep your project on-time and on-budget.

Successful Strategies
Planning, realistic budgeting, choosing the right team, focusing on quality, and staying involved and flexible are all crucial for maximizing the success of your new build or renovation project. By following these strategies, homeowners can start projects right.
