When it comes to turfgrass, Tahoma 31 is having a winning season.

This gorgeous bermudagrass variety, known for its hardiness, wear resistance and drought tolerance, has been planted on athletic fields all over the United States.

Tahoma 31 has been the playing surface for the MLB All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium. It’s been planted on the fields of the Las Vegas Aviators, Los Angeles Angels, the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Kentucky’s Churchill Downs and University of California San Diego’s Triton Soccer Stadium.

“It has to be solid and dense to hold up to the demands of the sports that are played on it,” says Sean Fong, owner of Hawaiian Turfgrass. “Tahoma 31’s root systems are even tough enough to hold up to professional football.”

Last February, Super Bowl LVII was played on Oklahoma State University’s Tahoma 31 field. The year before that, the University of Arkansas received the award for College Football Field of the Year, and its Razorbacks play their games on Tahoma 31. The Baltimore Ravens, Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles all play on home fields planted with this incredibly robust turfgrass.

“Some experts call Tahoma 31 the most drought-tolerant variety they’ve seen,” Fong says. “It has an extensive and deep root system. It can withstand varied mowing heights, drought stress-es, salinity and shade — conditions that negatively affect other bermudagrasses — and it thrives in full sun.”

Bred for island climates
Since it was bred to offer low vertical growth, Tahoma 31 is a great choice not just for athletic fields, but also for Hawaii’s residential lawns. Developed by leading turf scientists at Oklahoma State University in 2007, the finely textured, dark green grass went through rigorous testing for more than 15 years through the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program before being released for commercial production.

Like Tahoma 31, each variety sold by Hawaiian Turfgrass is bred to be more drought-tolerant, pest-resistant and requires less mowing than common older grasses.

In addition to Tahoma 31, Hawaiian Turfgrass, now celebrating its 15th year as Oahu’s premier turfgrass producer, offers Captiva St. Augustine, Stadium Zoysia, El Toro Zoysia, Seastar Seashore Paspalum and Zeon Zoysia, all grown in the native soil of its 67-acre Mililani farm.
