Building a multigenerational forever home

The Tong Family shares their experience with S. Tanaka Construction.

After working hard for many years, we were fi-nally able to think of renovating areas of our aging home. Soon after, we learned that our son and daughter-in-law decided to move back to Hawaii and were looking for a house. Ultimately, we decided to demolish our existing house and build a new multigenerational home. We needed to find a builder, and thankfully we were referred to S. Tanaka Construction by a close family friend. From the first meeting with owner Ryan Tanaka, we knew we were in great hands. We were impressed with Ryan’s knowledge, thoughtfulness and attention to detail when designing the first-floor layout in accordance with our functionality and physical limitations. Ryan even considered our future aging needs, such as ensuring the doors and hallways were wider for possible wheelchair accessibility and lowering the kitchen island to accommodate my short height. We were also happy that Ryan was willing to build a pantry that incorporated a sentimental cabinet that had been in the family for four decades. We were equally impressed with Ryan’s communication and flexibility to my son and daughter-in-law’s busy schedule when designing the second floor while they were still living in California.

Jen, the office manager and design coordinator, was amazing to work with. Jen made the experience so smooth, stress-free and even enjoyable. She was always available to answer any questions or concerns that we had throughout the construction process. Her open communication helped to put us at ease and feel like a valued client.

As we started to build the house, we quickly noticed the care and pride the entire staff of S. Tanaka Construction put into building our home. The crew and subs were hardworking and diligent with their work. We were amazed at how quickly and efficiently they worked, while still building our home as if it was their own.

Overall, our experience with S. Tanaka Construction was exceptional, and we couldn’t be happier with our brand new multi-generational home.
