A 66-year-old home in a Kailua neighborhood is starting a new life with renovation of the existing single-story structure and the addition of an accessory dwelling unit (ADU). The ADU was built above a new two-car garage. The creative design plan for the property was developed by the Homeworks Construction architectural design team in collaboration with the homeowner.
With completion of the ADU and the renovation of the existing 1,500-square-foot single-level dwelling, the new residence will provide a total of 3,000 square feet of living space.
The ADU includes a 100-square-foot uncovered lanai facing the mountain and a master bedroom and bath. A large guest bedroom with a full bath is at the other end of the carport facing the backyard. A full kitchen, dining room and living room are in the middle of the ADU.
All new and separate from the ADU is an existing house addition of a 400-square-foot bedroom with a full bathroom and slider door that accesses the backyard. A new 400-square-foot living room replaces the old lanai. All existing construction together occupies less than 40% of the 10,000-square-foot property.
