As a homeowner, you might already know that a beautiful, well-maintained lawn can add as much as 10%-15% to your property’s value.
But did you also know that a healthy lawn can actually cool the exterior of your home? On Oahu’s hottest summer days, a yard planted with grass can be up to 20 degrees cooler than dirt or rock, and as much as 50 degrees cooler than paved areas.
“A well-maintained grassy lawn can cool the air and encourage rain as part of the water cycle,” says Sean Fong, owner of Hawaiian Turfgrass. “Grass also helps clean the air by converting carbon dioxide and other pollutants into oxygen.”
A soft, healthy lawn also offers a safer space for keiki and pets to frolic.
“Natural grass is a good shock absorber, and it’s a lot cooler than dirt and cement, too,” Fong says.
With online ordering from Hawaiian Turfgrass, a licensed contractor based in Mililani, it’s never been easier to purchase a new lawn. The company offers five gorgeous turfgrass varieties, each with its own unique benefits and characteristics.
OAHU’S TRUSTED SOURCE FOR QUALITY TURFGRASS
For homeowners who prefer to let professionals handle a job from start to finish, Hawaiian Turfgrass can provide complete turnkey installation services.
The company also offers both pickup and curbside delivery for homeowners who want to do the job themselves. With the simpler service, Fong offers tips for preparation.
“If you want to do your own installation, follow these steps carefully before pickup or delivery, and your lawn should thrive for years,” he says.
First, remove the old lawn and all weeds, organically or with herbicides. This critical step will take two to four weeks, Fong says.
“You don’t want weeds and old grasses to come through the new sod. Take your time! Protect your investment.”
Second, rake and remove roots and plant material. Loosen and till the soil, then rake till surface is level.
In the third step — soil amendment — spread about an inch of good compost across the area. Till it with existing soil to avoid soil layering and create a healthy surface loaded with nutrients. Then, use drum rollers to level the surface.
“Now it’s time to install,” says Fong. “Plant the sod over your compost base in a checkerboard pattern, pushing the seams together. Use the drum roller to help your new sod make contact with the compost beneath it.”
For best results, water your new lawn two or three times a day for the next three weeks.
With Hawaiian Turfgrass, it’s easier and quicker than ever to purchase a beautiful new lawn.
