Kapahulu home rebuild moves forward
A single-family home rebuild in Kapahulu is among approximately a dozen new custom homes designed and built by Homeworks Construction in East Oahu neighborhoods over the past year. The rebuild replaces a 79-year-old family home on a 4,800-square foot lot on Edna Street, one of Kapahulu’s many streets named for members of the kamaaina Castle family. The James Castle family residence, located oceanfront on Kalakaua Avenue, gave the name to one of Waikiki’s popular surfbreaks, “Castles.”
Lying between Kaimuki, Waikiki and Diamond Head, Kapahulu comprises a commercial district running along Kapahulu Avenue and a single-family home neighborhood area, which was subdivided in the mid 1900s into residential lots ranging from approximately 2,000 to 6,000 square feet. Homes are a mix of the original one-story frame structures surrounded by gardens and shade trees, and new remodels and rebuilds that generally maximize use of the relatively small lots. “We demolished the original structures in February (see photo) to make way for a true multigenerational home,” says Homeworks president and chief of field operations Sylvio Boucher. “We’re designing the new home to accommodate three generations of the family who built the original house. The two-story residence has a total living area of 2,800 square feet, plus a 600-square-foot garage and 400-square-foot concrete lanai. Four bedrooms, three baths, a living room, dining room and kitchen with a large walk-in pantry are on the upper level, which has views of Waikiki, Diamond Head, the ocean and sunsets. On the ground floor are two bedrooms, one bath, a main living area, a wet bar, laundry and access to the outdoor lanai.”
