As any enthusiastic amateur chef can attest, a well-designed kitchen is a true joy. And even casual home cooks would love this kitchen.
Located on Kapahulu Avenue in a home built by Honolulu firm Rui Construction, it boasts plenty of snowy white granite counter space and an easily maintained floor of big ceramic tiles in a complementary shade. A stainless exhaust hood over the stove provides a retro vibe, and stainless appliances are placed in logical proximity. A trio of frosted glass fixtures hanging from the cathedral ceiling and a half-dozen recessed lights, provide ample overhead illumination.
Just above the toe kick at the bottom of each cabinet, a lighted strip that matches the lighting under the cupboards provides illumination for lower storage. The thoughtful addition makes this room even more functional. Behind a bank of drawers and cupboards, a hidden walk-in storage pantry offers another delightful surprise.
“The hidden pantry was really a unique addition to the house,” says Jon Xie, manager of Rui Building Supply, the construction company’s sister firm. “From outside it looks like cabinets, but when you open the door, it leads into a walk-in storage space behind the kitchen wall.”
The home on Kapahulu Avenue was built with impressive efficiency by a Rui Construction crew led by Ray Xie, who happens to be Jon’s father.
“They tore the old house down to the foundation, and built the new house from the ground up,” says Jon. “There were some delays with supply chains, but they managed to get it done within six or seven months.”
