More and more, consumers are turning away from carpet and opting for more durable surfaces such as wood, vinyl and tile when replacing their floor coverings. They know that they like the look and have heard a lot about health benefits and longevity of the product. But there is definitely a lot to know beyond that to get the right end result. Shirley Hilton of Kahala Pacific Floors offers these key tips to start with.
GET THE RIGHT PRODUCT
Examine your lifestyle and housekeeping practices. Consider the kind of home you live in (single family or condo), whether your environment is wet or dry, and whether you have a wood or concrete subfloor to determine what might be best.
GET THE RIGHT INSTALLER OR DIY INFO
To get the best installation, hire a licensed professional. They should know the proper procedures for testing for excess moisture, what installation method is best for your home, proper preparation of the subfloor and more. If you plan to do it yourself, consult a reputable source, such as the National Wood Flooring Association and follow manufacturer’s instructions to preserve your warranty.
VISUALIZE
Start with the floor you are dreaming about, then visit a good flooring showroom and take a look at all the available species. Ask if you can take samples home and then dream again. Your gut feeling is usually pretty reliable.
