Although the holiday season is generally not the best time to begin building a new custom home or remodeling, it could be a very good time to start planning for the new year.

“We receive inquiries and even schedule consultations right through the holidays at our office or at the proposed job site,” said Marshall Hickox, president and chief administrative officer of Homeworks Construction. “As with any business, we look ahead to a new year to allocate our time and resources before making commitments for a new project. So, we welcome inquiries from homeowners interested in building a new home or remodeling their present home — whether in the near future or down the road. We know that a lot of time is probably going to be spent upfront discussing their needs and goals and basically getting to know each other. People need to be sure they can work together successfully. There are a lot of personal dynamics involved in any building project.”

Hickox, a past president of Building Industry Association of Hawaii, considers choosing the right contractor the most important step in the process — whether a renovation, addition, new custom home or accessory dwelling unit — if the project is to be smooth, stress-free and ultimately successful. The homeowner should look for experience in similar projects and credentials that support the integrity of the builder.

Sources of information include Building Industry Association of Hawaii, which can verify that the builder is a licensed contractor. The builder’s own website will also familiarize a homeowner with projects that have been completed or may have won awards.

Homeworks projects currently in progress in Oahu neighborhoods include a custom home startup in Kaimuki and a custom rebuild nearing completion in Palolo (see accompanying photos).

Homeworks Construction was founded two decades ago as a design-build firm, an innovative concept at the time. The company provides all design and construction services inhouse, which enables it to accurately assess costs and time frames for each phase of the project from inception to completion, from planning and permitting to final finishes.

Specialties include multigenerational homes that take into consideration the lifestyles of all household members; accessory dwelling units, which have in some cases enabled families to stay together on one property; and aging-in-place designs. Homeworks has received certification as an Aging in Place Specialist from National Association of Home Builders, as well as the NAHB Certified Green Professional designation acknowledging the company’s commitment to building energy-efficient homes.

Homeworks was named “Builder of the Year” by the Building Industry Association of Hawaii and has been recognized as one of “Hawaii’s Best” Construction Companies inHonolulu Star-Advertiser‘s annual Hawaii’s Best Awards.
