Autumn in Hawaii is a combination of hot and cool days that alternatively delight and frustrate homeowners as they attempt to make it through the remaining part of the hot season.
Alvin, a homeowner in Makiki, had a hot home until he found a solution that was both energy efficient and comfortable. “It would take until the middle of the night with all the windows open for the home to cool down by itself to the cooler outside temperature,” he said. “My wife didn’t want to A/C the central part of the home and I wanted to get that cooler outside air inside my house.”
Alvin heard about the QuietCool system and had two installed in the attic of the home with an intake on the ceiling of his master bedroom and one in his main living space. Each system is independently controlled by countdown timer and speed selector.
Al Whitworth of Island Cooling explained how QuietCool works. “The sun heats the home all day,” He said.
“But the late afternoon sun is particularly intense at this time of year. With QuietCool, a homeowner can target air flow into their home by closing windows on the hot side and bringing in cooler air from the shady side of the home.
Our hope is that all year, but especially in the shoulder season, QuietCool can minimize the amount of time folks would run A/C and make their homes more breezy, fresh and comfortable.”
Alvin continued, “We live in an area with little cross ventilation so these Quiet-Cool have been a Godsend to us! For us, they work best in the evening when the house is retaining the heat of the day but the temperature outside has cooled a bit. We turn on both fans and within 10-15 minutes, the hot air is expelled and the house is cooled down to nearly outdoor temperature.”
Another satisfied homeowner is Kili Kono.
“I live in the Ahuimanu area and have had two QuietCool systems from Island Cooling for several years. The larger system cools the majority of the house and the smaller one cools the master bedroom. When the weather heats up or on days when we have Kona winds I put both of them on in the late afternoon and by early evening the upstairs is nice and cool. This is a great product with unbelievable service.”
Ivan Whitworth of Island Cooling adds, “We have QuietCool systems in more than 10 different sizes, and this year we worked with the manufacturer to develop a roof mounted system that works for open beam ceilings and small attics. When paired with solar powered awnings to block direct late afternoon heat from entering windows we have a lot of tools for making a home healthier and cooler!”
Island Cooling, run by brothers Ivan and Al Whitworth is Hawaii’s distributor of QuietCool whole house fans and other energy efficient home cooling products including air-purifiers, solar powered attic fan and solar powered awnings. Hawaii Energy offers rebates of up to $150 per system.
