Over the past few months, many island homeowners have updated home offices, kitchens, bathrooms and other interior spaces to make them more functional.

Savvy homeowners are also making it a point to update their lawns.

“Healthy lawns minimize dust, clean the air, reduce noise and create a cooling effect,” says Sean Fong, owner of Hawaiian Turfgrass. “They also trap stormwater runoff, which helps prevent erosion and improve flood control.

Best of all, a gorgeous lawn can set the stage for functional outdoor spaces for your family — think sitting and dining areas, barbecue stations, recreational areas and play zones.

“Our customers rave about the outdoor living spaces they’ve created with their new lawns, and the quality they’ve added to their lives and family time,” says Fong. “Having a peaceful little oasis in your backyard can be a game-changer.”

Hawaiian Turfgrass’ online ordering system at hawaiianturfgrass.com makes it simple to select your sod, place an order and arrange for delivery in minutes. If you’re planning to handle installation yourself, follow these steps first to help ensure that your new lawn will thrive.

Remove the old lawn. “Whether you do it with herbicides or organically, this step is critical,” says Fong. “Take your time and protect your investment. You don’t want old grasses coming through your new sod!”

When done correctly, this step should take two to four weeks.

Rake and remove roots and other material. Loosen and till the soil, then rake until surface is level.

Spread 1 inch of high-quality compost across the entire area, creating a healthy surface with lots of nutrients.

Create a level surface. Spread the compost with rakes, then use a drum roller to remove divots.

When your turfgrass arrives, plant the squares of sod over your compost in a checkerboard pattern, with seams pushed close together.

Water the sod liberally to encourage roots to tack down. Then go back and forth over the sod with a drum roller so each square makes contact with the compost beneath it.

After installation, water your new lawn two or three times a day for the next three weeks, and follow the recommended maintenance routine.
