Island Cooling LLC recently announced that Sol-Lux Solar Powered smart awnings are now available for Hawaii homes. “We’re always looking for ways to make our local homes cooler,” said Ivan Whitworth, co-owner if Island Cooling. “The Sol-Lux awning senses sun exposure over a window and self deploys to put a shadow over the window to block heat from entering the home.”

Michelle in Aiea was one of the first to install Sol-Lux. “My Ewa windows have a great view,” she said. “But there are a few hours in each day where the sun comes off the roof and shines directly into my home. With these 100 percent solar powered awnings I can shade my windows without blocking the view.”

A sensor on each Sol-Lux awning reads the amount of light and then automatically deploys to block the sun. A built in solar panel charges during the day. As the sun sets the awning stows automatically. To prolong the life of the awning, built-in sensors also retract in high winds or rain. For those homeowners who want to control their awnings, a phone app control lets them override sensors and schedule deployment at specific times of day or even put the system on a vacation hold when away from home.

Colorado based Sol-Lux manufactures the system from premium materials and backs each awning with an industry leading five-year warranty. Island Cooling representatives like Gideon Whitworth will measure homes for Sol-Lux Awnings and work with the homeowner to select color and length. “Each awning is made based on customer specific color choices for both the cassette and awning colors,” said Whitworth.

Keola of Waipahu got his Sol-Lux awnings installed at the start of summer. “They keep my living room a lot cooler,” he said. “Plus, having the ability to retract the system manually with the phone app lets me keep my yard open for activities. I enjoy my awnings a lot.”
